Frequently Asked Question (FAQ #26)

Do we have any cable with a cable shield that is connected to the shield of the USB converter and can be connected t the shield of a D-connector at the other side?

Answer:

Connective Peripherals have a range of wire-ended cables for USB-RS232, USB-RS485 and USB-RS422 allowing you to attach your own preferred connector such as a DB9 with your own custom pinout. These cables have the USB-serial electronics built into the USB connector, with the cable carrying the RS232, RS485 or RS422 serial signals. The off-the-shelf versions use unshielded cable and so the shield is not available to connect to the DB9 shell/shield. We can however supply customised versions for these cable types, including the use of shielded cable. Custom cables can be supplied as wire-ended versions, or can have a specified connector fitted.

We also have off-the-shelf USB-Serial cables and adapters which have the DB9 shell linked to the USB connector shield. These products have the USB-Serial electronics inside the DB9 connector enclosure or the adapter enclosure, and connect to a computer via a shielded USB cable. The USB cable is detachable on some models, such as our USB-RS485 adapter USB2-F-5001, allowing you to use longer cables up to 5m. Other models have an integrated USB cable ranging from 10cm to 5m (depending on model) such as our USB-RS232 cable ES-U-1001-R100 or UT232R. Note that the coupling of the shield connection between the USB and serial connector varies between models, depending on the hardware design, optical isolation and serial connector type. Contact us at support@connectiveperipherals.com if you have questions about a particular model.

For customised versions of any of our products, get in touch via our Custom Cables page to find out more and to discuss your requirements. Note that custom versions may be subject to MOQs and some types of customisation are only available on certain product families and models.
